In order to serve as many people as we can, there is a 24 hour cancellation policy. We totally understand that life happens and can be hectic. So, disregarding emergencies, appointents not cancelled before the 24 hour mark are subject to the full charge of the amount of the appointment.
Although spinal adjustments are considered to be one of the safest, most effective forms of therapy for musculoskeletal problems, there are possible risks and complications associated with these procedures as follows:
Soreness: Like exercise, it is common to experience muscle soreness in the first few treatments.
Dizziness: Temporary symptoms like dizziness and nausea can occur but are relatively rare.
Fracture/Joint Injury: In isolated cases underlying physical defects or pathologies like weak bones from osteoporosis may render the patient susceptible to injury. When osteoporosis, degenerative disc(s) or other abnormality is detected, this office will proceed with extra caution.
Stroke: Although strokes happen with some frequency in our world, strokes from chiropractic adjustments are rare. Nerve or brain damage including stroke is reported to occur once in a million to once in ten million treatments. This is about the same chance as a normal dose of Tylenol or aspirin causing death.
Informed Consent To Ancillary Treatments
In addition to chiropractic adjustments, we may consider using additional treatments to aid your body in healing. Nutritional supplements may be suggested for a daily regimen. Side effects are uncommon but possible. Please let Dr. Mahaffey know about any medications you take or nutrient side-effects upon occurrence. Physiotherapy may include hot packs, massage, Graston (scar & adhesion breaking), cupping, traction and exercises. These treatments could cause the following risks: circular discoloration of the skin with cupping, burning of the skin with hot packs, bruises with Graston and muscle spasms and soreness with traction and exercises. Nutritional supplements may cause brief or temporary changes in digestion and or the rare headache.
Other Treatments Options Available
Over-the-counter analgesics: Risks of medications include irritation of stomach, liver and kidneys, and other side effects in a significant number of cases.
Medical Care: This is typically in the form of prescription anti-inflammatory drugs, tranquilizers and analgesics. The risks of these include a multitude of undesired side-effects and patient dependence in a number of cases.
Hospitalization: The hospital setting adds additional risk of exposure to communicable disease, iatrogenic (doctor induced) mishap, and considerable expense.
Surgery: In conjunction with medical care, surgery adds risks of adverse reaction to anesthesia, extended convalescent period (recovery time) and considerable expense.
